When her father dies, Maud learns that her mother, the beautiful Eleonore, whom she had never known, was from Sweden. She travels to Stockholm to meet her Swedish family and discovers both a new country and a mysterious past.

Maud also learns that Lukas, the handsome older man she meets, was deeply in love with Eleonore in his youth. Maud’s attraction to him is marred as details of Eleonore’s past emerge from family letters.

The story that is revealed, of a rebellious and somewhat immoral young woman, shatters Maud’s fantasy of the fairytale princess she had always believed her mother to be.

Only when Maud reads her mother’s final letter does she learn the truth about her own parentage, and Lukas.

Set in Stockholm, its beautiful archipelago and Australia

What can I say. Not too exciting, certainly no real surprises but nicely told. Very honest off that makes sense.

Swedish for Beginners a novel edition by Susanne O'Leary Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

My purchase of an has opened an unexpected world to me -- that of new and/or "indie" authors that I would otherwise not have found.

Susanne O'Leary is one of those authors, and her book "Swedish for Beginners" is a treat. Protagonist Maud discovers, on the sudden death of her father Jack, that her mother Eleonore, who died when Maud was only four, was Swedish. Jack had never told Maud of this -- or spoken of Eleonore at all.

Maud is surprised by the fact of her Swedish heritage, and moreso by the fact that there is an entire coterie of relatives looking forward to meeting her. However, she travels to Sweden with some trepidation. The book delves into her burgeoning relationships with the Swedish side of her family, the revelation of some deep-seated emotional connections between her mother and others, and her own growth through the process. The characters are real, including from the perspective of someone who has worked as a family historian for a number of years, as I have, and I was sorry to have to let them go!
Although out of my usual genre, I liked Swedish for Beginners and I've spent a few days reflecting on it. This surprised me, didn't expect the book to linger in my mind. Susanne O'Leary weaves a story about a woman who goes to Sweden to get to find long-lost family members and find herself as well. Swedish for Beginners was a wonderful surprise for me.

I liked the emotion that I felt while reading this book. Along with Maud, I was frustrated, happy and worried during various times in the novel. However, she wasn't the absolute perfect protagonist as there were times I was frustrated AT her. That's the fun of reading a book that engrosses you. I found Ms. O'Leary's writing to be elegant with beautiful descriptions. I felt like I too was visiting Sweden. There was little I didn't like about this book.

I am surprised to find myself thinking that I will most likely try another one of Ms. O'Leary's novels.
I mostly enjoyed this story. Other people have described the plot, so I'll just give my impression. This story was entertaining and kept my attention throughout. However, I found it hard to really engage because some of the characters weren't very likable to me. First, Maud's cousin Barbara is flat-out rude. She's often rude to Maud and says mean things, and Maud never really stands up to her. There's no backstory to Barbara to really flesh her out as a more 3-dimensional character, either. Further, Maud's boyfriend in Sweden, Lukas, is mean-spirited, self-absorbed, and also relatively one-dimensionsal, although the author does attempt to make him deeper through letters written by Maud's mother many years ago. This effort is a clever one but it didn't quite come together, as Lukas never makes it back from the negative image painted of him throughout most of the book. Finally, Maud's stepmother Kathleen is also quite one-dimensional. Although she really only shows up in a couple of scenes, as an important part of Maud's life some attention should have been paid to developing her personality.

Overall, like I said, engaging enough to keep me occupied and I was never bored with the story. I only wish the characters were more fully developed.
Love the book. Good story with great character development. As posted by others the version has really bad editing and was very annoying that is why I gave it 4 stars. I have read other books by this author and she really does a great job with her characters. You really feel like you know them and understand them. She also makes sure to sum up all the issues before ending the book and not leave you hanging about what happened to ........? I would recommend if you don't mind the editing on version.
Really enjoyed the details on Swedish culture & geography & traditions. I have Swedish heritage, and recently traveled there for the first time, so that made it quite relevant to me!
Imagine, if you can, growing up never having known your mother. Your father is tight-lipped and tells you only that she died when you were a toddler. When dad dies, leaving little family except a stepmother you never got along with, you feel unmoored - like you have no roots. Then going through dad's old boxes you find a clue that helps you connect with your mother's family and also, in a way, with your long-gone mother.

"Swedish for Beginners" is both a light mystery and an exploration of roots. What makes a family? Is it nature (ties through blood) or nurture (the people that were always there for you). Maybe the answer is a little of both.
The sudden loss of her father signals the start of a journey of self-discovery for Maud, a 30-year-old woman from Ireland. She discovers her Swedish roots, when she realized that her mother, who passed when Maud was only four, was from Stockholm. Maud travels to Sweden to meet with the extended Swedish family that has been kept secret from her all these years by her father.

Susanne O'Leary unravels Maud's journey in a captivating way, with the reader immediately drawn into Maud. One feels her loneliness and struggles as she tries to deal with her new heritage and her new relationships. O'Leary's characters are fascinating and well fleshed. On a personal note, I was very touched by this story on several levels. I related to Eleonore (Maud's mother), in how she had uprooted from her family and moved to a new country, and also with Maud and her coming to terms with her mother's death and trying to getting to know her posthumously.

I would highly recommend this charming story to anyone who enjoys a light, relaxing read.
What can I say. Not too exciting, certainly no real surprises but nicely told. Very honest off that makes sense.
