Our narrator, ten year old Henry, is off to the beach with his pet cat Coconut Kate to visit his favorite Uncle, also named Henry.PLOT SPOILER. In a few short pages we have a ripping ocean adventure involving a sea monster and some pretty dim pirates. END SPOILER.
This brief story is breezy and well written. Henry has an engaging voice and confides in the reader in an authentic way. While the plot is silly it is exciting and fun, and the author manages to slip in some lightly delivered messages about bullying and about trusting family and loved ones. Sometimes these sorts of books can have "tone" problems, because they can be fart heavy or because the author's idea of funny kid behavior doesn't square with mine, (i.e. con-man kids, snarky kids, mean practical joker kids, tantrum kids, and so on). Here, Henry is mellow, smart and decent, but still with a sense of fun and adventure. There are some funny throwaway lines and a few insightful observations by our narrator. For me, that's the recipe for a nice read.
Plot, issues, vocabulary and style suggest that this would be a nice choice for an early chapter book reader. I'd feel comfortable giving this to a very young reader.
